Cricket: Coach impressed with everyone

There are winners and losers in every trial but Otago coach Dimitri Mascarenhas would not put anyone in the latter category.

Technically, the Iain Robertson XI was the winner. His side reached 314, having restricted the Aaron Redmond XI to 227 for nine on the opening day.

The scores, though, were of only passing relevance to Mascarenhas.

It was his first chance to see how his charges were shaping up and he was more interested with the effort than the result. On that score, he was impressed.

''It has been a very, very worthwhile couple of days,'' he said.

''I've been very impressed with all the guys to be honest.

"I told them at the start it was a great opportunity to show me what you've got and everyone involved has really stepped up and put their names forward.''

Some more than others, though. Aaron Redmond and Neil Wagner were standouts on the opening day.

Redmond batted through some tricky conditions early and then flourished to reach 66 before he was run out.

Wagner had a tough first stint at the bowling crease but he returned with vigour and snapped out four wickets in 10 balls.

He finished with five for 24.

''Aaron Redmond, in what were pretty tough conditions against the new ball, really gutsed it out and really showed the way. He got a good 60-odd and that was great to see.

''And Wags [Wagner] always gives his all in training and showed the guys what top-level cricket is all about.''

Yesterday it was Iain Robertson leading the way.

The hard-hitting middle-order batsman has perhaps been under-utilised by Otago in the past but demonstrated his ability with an aggressive knock of 75 from 101 deliveries.

Another player to enhance his reputation was left-armer Craig Smith.

He took two for 35 from 12 overs and on Sunday made the most of his opportunity with the bat, adding an undefeated 54.

Spinner Nick Beard also had a good workout.

He took four for 59 from 22 overs.

Mascarenhas will name a squad of 13 tomorrow for a two-day warm-up match against Canterbury in Rangiora on October 19-20.

Robertson XI 314 (Iain Robertson 75, Neil Wagner 50, Shaun Fitzgibbon 39no, Nick Beard four for 59, Craig Smith 2 for 35), Redmond XI 227 for nine (Aaron Redmond 66, Craig Smith 54no, Neil Wagner five for 54).
