Cricket: Fine stand not enough to break Albion's winning streak

Kaikorai's Iain Robertson blasted 112 from just 49 balls but it was not enough to help secure a win for his side.

Albion 300 for eight beat Kaikorai 273 by 27 runs

Instead, Albion extended its winning streak to four games this season thanks to a fine century from Jack Harper.

He also scored 112 but at a much more sedate pace (145 deliveries) to help his side post 300 for eight at Culling Park. Harper had good support from Roald Badenhorst, who hit 55 from 56 at the top of the order, and Tim Ford with 45 from 54. Felix Page cashed in on the solid platform with a whirlwind 50 from just 19 balls.

Robertson replied by smashing 11 sixes and seven fours in an onslaught that threatened to take the game away from Albion before he holed out to Jamie Glenn off the bowling of Dexter Marsh.

Marsh's six for 40 from 7.2 overs was another outstanding individual effort. The last six Kaikorai wickets fell for just 18 more runs and Marsh accounted for four of them.

Kaikorai had slumped from 255 for four to be all out for 273.

University-Grange 182-9 lost to Caris-brook-Dunedin 185-4 by six wickets

Left-armer Chris Ware took four wickets to help set up a six-wicket win for Carisbrook-Dunedin against the struggling University-Grange.

Batsman Nick Eathorne finished it off with 96 from 81 balls.

Grange has registered just three points in the opening four rounds and stumbled to 182 for nine. Top-order batsman Brenton Thompson scored 36 and Daniel Grimes scored a valuable 44 at No7.

The innings limped along, though, after Ware struck first ball, removing Matt McCormick. Ware finished with four for 23.

The chase was reasonably brief, as Eathorne stroked 14 fours and two sixes.

North East Valley 173 beat Otago Country 151 by 22 runs

In a low-scoring fixture, North East Valley defended a modest total of 173 thanks to a late flurry of wickets.

Valley's Dominic Thompson top-scored with 33 in a rather sorry scoreboard where extras (24) were the next-biggest contributor.

Mark Knox was the most successful of the Country bowlers with four for 37 from 9.1 overs but opener Adam Hubber took two for 17 from nine overs and was perhaps the pick of the bowlers, while Kieran Parker also picked up two wickets.

In replay, Chris Beck made 71 at the top but got precious little support. Sam Blakely made a fighting 20 not out but Country's last four wickets tumbled for just eight runs.

Jerram Bateman was the hero, taking all four and finishing with figures of four for one from 2.3 overs.

Taieri 157 lost to Green Island 160 for nine by one wicket

Taieri came within a wicket of securing an unlikely win against the defending champion, Green Island.

Having managed to scrape together a modest target of 157 at Memorial Park, Taieri would not have held out much hope of defending its tally.

Ryan Littlejohn had top-scored with 28 and Jerrym Frost added a valuable 25 at No3.

Green Island's attack shared the wickets but Gregor Croudis nabbed three for 23 and Hayden Finch two for 31.

The chase seemed a mere formality but Matt Bruce (four for 39) and Jack Hunter (two for 23) combined to knock over the top order. Finch (26) and Ben Hitchcock (24) edged Green Island closer to victory and Jeremy Scott (6 not out) and Matthew Lobb (5 not out) added 13 for the last wicket to secure the win.
