Cricket: Rain limits playing time

Rain prevented Otago falling further behind in its Plunket Shield match against Central Districts in Napier.

Only 36 overs were possible yesterday but Central had time to advance its score from 67 for none to 179 for two.

It trails Otago by 28 runs with eight first-innings wickets in hand. It is a good position but, with more than 60 overs lost to poor weather, forcing a result will be a bit tougher.

Some overs can be made up with the earlier start time of 10am scheduled for the two remaining days.

Opener Ben Smith will be feeling nervous overnight. He is on 75 not out and in sight of a second first-class century.

Left-armer Neil Wagner and spinner Nick Beard picked up the only wickets to fall. Wagner nicked out Jamie How for 42 and Beard had George Worker caught for 35.

• The weather was better in the South as Canterbury got through to 226 for four in its second innings against Wellington at Hagley Oval.

It leads Wellington by 125 runs with one day remaining.

Debutant Greg Dawson set a solid platform for Canterbury with 62 at the top, and Peter Fulton chipped in with 37.

Former Otago batsman Neil Broom is playing in his 100th first-class game and was undone for just five.

But Andrew Ellis (33) and Henry Nicholls (44) combined in a fighting and unbroken stand of 72 for the fifth-wicket.
