Controversial cricketer Jesse Ryder has withdrawn from the New Zealand A squad for personal reasons.

New Zealand Cricket's general manager national selection Bruce Edgar said Ryder made the decision after meeting with SBS Bank Otago Volts officials in Dunedin this morning.

"NZC respects Jesse's decision and is currently considering options for a replacement," said Edgar.

The team was scheduled to leave on Wednesday night for four games in the Middle East.

Otago Cricket issued a statement this afternoon and said Ryder was dealing with a personal issue and requested his privacy be respected.
He withdrew from the Volts' match against Canterbury yesterday, also for personal reasons.

Chief executive Ross Dykes said Otago Cricket would continue to work with Jesse with a view to him rejoining the team's Georgie Pie Super Smash campaign - but a decision on that would not be made until later in the week.

"Otago is disappointed for Jesse but a player's well-being is paramount and, with that in mind, our priority is to help him towards the best possible outcome."
