Cricket: Poster boy image well deserved

Taylor Cumberland. That's who.

If you have not heard his name then you will, we are sure.

The 17-year-old is already famous at Kings' High School. A near full-size cardboard cut-out of the year 12 pupil greets you at the school's reception.

He is rather sheepish about its existence, and it is not hard to imagine he cops some grief about being the poster boy.

But the honour is well-deserved. Last year he became the first King's player to score a double century in an interschool game, whacking an unbeaten 201 against Waitaki Boys.

The right-hander was at it again at the weekend, this time during a second grade match against Carisbrook-Dunedin at Kensington Oval, where he smashed 251.

He had some help. The grade is not as strong as it once was and Carisbrook-Dunedin was ''short a couple of fielders''. The game was also played on an artificial wicket. Regardless, it was a terrific effort.

The opener was run out ''towards the end'' of the last over of the 50-over game trying to scamper back for a second and retain the strike.

His innings featured 18 fours and 13 sixes and he combined in a 241-run partnership for the second wicket with Joel Meade (144) as well as a 104-run opening stand.

King's posted a massive total of 473 for three and dismissed its opposition for just 66 to win by more than 400 runs.

Taylor is the son of former Otago rugby prop Steve Cumberland and has been playing cricket since he was ''about 8''. He is a handy rugby player too, but cricket is the sport he is focused on.

His favourite shot is the on-drive and he admired the batting of Sachin Tendulkar - haven't we all.

''Obviously, he is a pretty awesome role model.''

Taylor is a member of the Otago under-19 squad and has set himself the goal of playing cricket for his province.

''That would be the ultimate goal. That would be awesome.''
