Cricket: Wells out and Ryder unlikely for CD match

Otago will be without Sam Wells and probably Jesse Ryder for its twenty20 match against Central Districts in Napier on Friday.

Wells was forced to leave the field with a calf injury during Otago's five-wicket win against the Northern Knights in Wellington on Sunday night and was expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign, coach Dimitri Mascarenhas said.

''He has torn his calf muscle,'' he said.

''We don't know the extent until we have some scans.''

Ryder injured his back at the gym last week and is ''unlikely'' to travel to Napier with the team on Thursday.

''I think he is unlikely. There won't be a formal decision until [today].''

Ryder has missed the past three games for Otago, so the Volts will have to find just the one replacement.

With seven players in the United Arab Emirates with either the Black Caps or the New Zealand A side, Otago's depth has been sorely tested.

Wells' replacement will probably come from the Otago A team that played Canterbury A in a two-day game earlier this month.

Michael Rae bowled well in the match, taking five for 52.

Otago contracted player Sam Blakely was useful and opener Ryan Duffy posted an undefeated 50 in his second innings.

Seamer Michael Snedden has been on the fringe of the side for the past few years and may come into contention as well.
