Cricket: Maiden 100 but Craig disappointed for Otago

Perhaps Mark Craig will be able to celebrate his maiden first-class hundred some time soon. Maybe even buy No11 Jacob Duffy a beer for helping him reach the milestone.

But shortly after Otago's heartbreaking loss to Northern Districts, Craig was just brassed off.

He had just been bowled for a 104 and had featured in a wonderful and unexpected Otago record 10th-wicket stand against Northern Districts with Duffy. The pair had added 102 and got their side to within 28 runs of what would have been a most remarkable win.

Set a mammoth 502 for victory, the Volts' valiant chase ended at 474 and, ultimately, in defeat.

''Obviously, I'm very disappointed I couldn't help get the boys over the line,'' Craig said.

''It was nice to get a hundred, though.''

He brought up the milestone with a gentle push into the leg side. The field was back protecting the boundary and happy to concede a run so they could attack Duffy's wicket.

Craig did a marvellous job of protecting Duffy from the strike, though, and of making sure he picked up a boundary early in overs.

The tension grew as the pair's partnership mounted and the target came down.

''It was just a matter of being able to bat time, then we would be there or thereabouts. Obviously, we didn't bat quite long enough.''

Otago did not make great use of the ball in the first few hours of the game, which proved telling, he said.

The Volts did not bat very well in their first innings, either.

''We were slow out of the gates [in the game] and it is hard to play catch-up like that. It is very hard to get back in front and win a game from the position we got ourselves in.''
