If you want to get the best out of a McCullum, make him captain.

We have become used to seeing Brendon McCullum lead from the front for the Black Caps, but it was the turn of his older brother, Nathan, yesterday.

The Otago all-rounder was standing in for regular captain Aaron Redmond and blazed 119 from 109 balls to set up a 16-run win against Wellington in Queenstown yesterday.

It was his maiden one-day hundred. He also took three wickets and helped his side win the key moments.

''It was just nice to be able to contribute to another win for Otago,'' McCullum responded when asked if it was his finest performance for the Volts.

''It is good to see our boys coming good ... after the disappointing twenty20 campaign.''

The Volts had slumped to 65 for four before McCullum combined in an Otago record fifth-wicket partnership of 150 with Iain Robertson.

He played an uncharacteristic innings. He usually attacks early, but was content to spend time getting set and it paid dividends.

''That is the beauty of being able to bat at No 5 for Otago this year. I am going to come in in some circumstances like that and it was really pleasing to put on a big partnership with Iain Robertson. I thought he played fantastically.''

McCullum also picked up the wicket of debutant Alecz Day, who was threatening to help take the game away from Otago in a dangerous 88-run stand with James Franklin.
