Cricket: Breaks go way of Broom, then Otago

Neil Broom probably still has a bit of rope burn this morning.

The former Volts batsman provided controversy in the washed-out match between Otago and Canterbury at the University Oval yesterday.

He was fielding at a deep square leg position when Michael Bracewell sent a delivery from Todd Astle hurtling his way.

It looked as though it might sail over Broom's head but the former Black Cap made an athletic leap to haul it in and tumbled on to the boundary rope in the process.

He made a belated attempt to throw the ball in the air and catch it in the field of play but, from the Otago Daily Times' position, it was clear he came into contact with the rope while effecting the catch.

He claimed the catch, however, and sheepishly celebrated with his new team-mates while a former team-mate trudged back to the dressing room.

Some wonderful work from photographer Gerard O'Brien captured the moment Broom crossed the rather chunky rope.

It was a six in our book but not in the almanack. A tough break for Bracewell, but Otago perhaps got lucky with the weather.

The Volts were 146 for five when the rain set in and were, sorry about the pun, on the ropes a wee bit.

Both sides picked up two points for the abandoned match. Otago is in third place with 15 points, while Canterbury is in fifth place on six points.

The result hurt Otago's chances of finishing in the top two but has strengthened its grip on a place in the playoffs.

Central Districts lead the competition with 22 points from Auckland (20), with Northern Districts in fourth on 12 points.

Wellington is in last place with five points.

Two rounds remain, with a maximum of 10 points at stake.

Otago made the worst possible start to its innings when Sam Wells was dismissed first ball.

He took the ball on the body from Hamish Bennett and watched helplessly as it rolled into his wickets.

But Hamish Rutherford and Aaron Redmond responded with 109-run stand for the second wicket.

Rutherford gave a chance on 30 and again on 41 but played some trademark square drives and plundered the off side.

He was run out coming back for a second on 48 in what must have been a close call.

Redmond carried his bat, stroking a marvellous 61 from 90 deliveries.

Otago's next assignment is against Central Districts at the University Oval on Sunday.
