Cricket: Otago unchanged for preliminary final

Otago has named an unchanged squad for the preliminary final against Central Districts in New Plymouth tomorrow.

Eighteen-year-old all-rounder Josh Finnie carried the drinks in the sudden-death semifinal win against Northern Districts in Queenstown on Saturday, while left-armer Craig Smith was left out of the 12.

It is hard to see Otago making any changes to its starting XI.

Perhaps the only concern is with all-rounder Jimmy Neesham.

He has been struggling with a back complaint and did not bowl in the three-wicket win against Northern Districts.

However, he made a valuable 38 and can command a spot as a specialist batsman.

Otago is just one win away from contesting the final but its form has been patchy and, curiously, three of the team's four wins have come against Northern Districts. The other win was against Wellington, which finished last.

Central will start as favourite.

The Stags were the form team during the round-robin phase but were tipped up by Auckland in the major semifinal.

However, they had a four-wicket win against Volts in Dunedin just over a week ago.

Set a target of 256, Central had slumped to 40 for four.

But wicketkeeper-batsman Kruger van Wyk rescued his side with a wonderful undefeated century, and Dane Cleaver whacked 74 from 70.

The winner of tomorrow's game will play Auckland in the final on Sunday.
