Cricket: White Ferns disintegrate in run chase

A batting capitulation doomed the White Ferns to a heavy loss against England at Mt Maunganui yesterday.

Chasing England's modest total of 194, New Zealand never recovered after captain Suzie Bates was run out without troubling the scorers.

Bates was instrumental in New Zealand's 67-run win against England on Wednesday with a hard-hitting ton, but her early wicket yesterday set the tone.

The Kiwis quickly slumped to 62 for five after her dismissal, before being rolled within 36.1 overs.

Only No 4 Kate Broadmore (20) and No 8 Anna Peterson (21) managed to score at least 20 runs, as England romped to a 90-run win.

Medium pacer Anya Shrubsole ripped through the New Zealand middle-order, finishing with match-best figures of four wickets for 36 runs from her 10 allotted overs.

Earlier, England captain and opener Charlotte Edwards scored a game-high 65 from 100 balls, striking nine boundaries in the process.

Wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor struck 45 at better than a run a ball batting at No 4. Offspinner Peterson was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers, taking four for 25 from 7.2 overs.

The two sides play again at Mt Maunganui tomorrow.
