Cricket: Restrictions so all have good experience

Before you pack a month's worth of cold meat and drag your couch down to the University Oval, you should do some homework.

There would be nothing worse than rocking up to today's World Cup match between the Black Caps and Scotland only to find out you cannot bring in your chilly bin full of haggis - although the seagulls may love you for it.

The World Cup was a major global event and it was important to remember the tournament had different entry conditions to regular cricket matches, New Zealand World Cup operations manager Anthony Crummy said.

With all the extra infrastructure in place, the changes are to ensure the safety and comfort of all spectators.

That means the old deck chair you have been taking down to cricket matches since W. G. Grace was a lad might not be allowed in.

And living room furniture is definitely on the outer.

''We have got standard terms for entry conditions across all the venues and really it is because we've changed the configuration of the venues with so much temporary seating and lots of other bits of overlay,'' he said.

''So you won't be able to bring in couches and big chairs and those sorts of things. Folding chairs and camping chairs that you usually bring in won't be permitted. The low-profile ones, the ones that you might see on the beach for example, are allowed in.

''It is just about making sure everyone can see and has a good experience.

''Some of the other things you can't bring in include hard chilly bins. That is to manage the flow around the venue. You can bring in soft-shell bags to bring in your food.''

Smoking in the venues will only be permitted in designated areas and intoxicated people will be asked to leave.

''That is in line with business as usual, really.''

Once you get in, the best place to catch a six is on one of the grass embankments - there is more room to move and you will be at extra cover when Brendon McCullum is on strike.

The gates open at 9.30am. Have fun. Stay safe and keep your eye on the ball.
