Cricket: Six wicket haul sets up Taieri

The man with the best name in Otago sport had the figures of the day in Dunedin senior cricket on Saturday.

University Grange 87 lost to Taieri 91 for four by six wickets

Taieri bowler Shelford Meads evoked the ruthlessness of his two sporting namesakes as he tore University Grange to shreds at Brooklands.

Meads followed up the good early work of young seamer Jack Hunter, who took two quick wickets, to humble the students inside 25 overs.

In just 6.5 overs, Meads returned the outstanding figures of six for 29.

It could have been a lot worse for University Grange. At one stage, it was 42 for eight, and only a couple of late cameos from James McMillan (19) and Sam Peterson (12) pushed the total to as high as it got.

Taieri has also had a rough season but it was not going to let this one slip away. Jack Driscoll posted 20 before Hunter iced the win off the last ball of the 23rd over with an unbeaten 32.

Green Island 146 beat Carisbrook Dunedin 122 by 24 runs

Dion Lobb produced yet another five wicket bag in a remarkable senior career as Green Island defended a moderate total at Tonga Park.

Lobb had five for 54 in 16.2 overs, proving particularly effective at mopping up the Carisbrook Dunedin middle and tail.

Fellow seasoned Islanders Bradley Scott and Mark Joyce each grabbed a brace of wickets against a Carisbrook Dunedin batting order that relied reasonably heavily on a single player.

Brad Rodden showed his class with a breezy 61, smashing seven fours and four sixes in his 50 ball stay.

Earlier, Green Island had batted poorly, and was in a decent hole at 55 for seven before Scott (52 not out off 56 balls) came to the rescue.

Like last week, just two senior games were played, to allow senior cricketers to perform net duties for teams training for Cricket World Cup matches.
