Cricket: Simpson century sparks NEV win

A century and a couple of five wicket bags - that is how you clean up a game of cricket in very little time.

NEV 260 for eight dec beat Carisbrook Dunedin 56 by 204 runs

North East Valley romped to victory at Tonga Park No 2 thanks to three superb individual efforts in the Dunedin senior match on Saturday.

Jesse Simpson got the ball rolling with an imperious 109, backed up by Adam Miles (43) and Will Kindley (35), asValley declared on 260 in the 58th over.

That was always going to be tricky for Carisbrook Dunedin, but collapsing for 56 inside 16 overs was an unfortunate response to the challenge.

North East Valley only needed two bowlers. Rising speedster Sam Blakely took five for 23, and Keegan Harrison five for 31.

In a lamentable batting effort, only Liam Eathorne (a semi heroic 12 not out) and Chris Ware (11) reached double figures.

Kaikorai 153 beat Taieri 85 by 68 runs

There was another awful collapse at Bishopscourt as Taieri wasted a promising start.

Chasing 154 for victory, Taieri reached 59 for one after a solid, grafting effort from opening batsman Toby Batchelor (34 off 63 balls).

But it all went pear shaped after that as Kaikorai bowlers Hamish Robertson and Ricky Black - who returned the identical figures of four for 16 - ran amok, and it was all over in the 29th over.

Earlier, Kaikorai had started woefully, plunging to five for three and 19 for four in the face of good opening spells from Taieri fast bowlers Tipene Friday and Jack Hunter.

The cavalry arrived in the marvellously counter attacking form of Josh Finnie (58 off 46 balls) and Geordie Scott (47 off 32), who ensured the home side had a competitive total.

All Kaikorai's final six wickets were taken by Dwayne Weir, whose six for 42 was comfortably the highlight of the day for Taieri.

OBHS 157 lost to Albion 161 for nine by one wicket

It wasn't quite the Black Caps v Australia at Brooklands, but the margin of victory was the same.

Albion scraped home in the 44th over with just one wicket to spare, and while it is always unfair to say a cricketer won a game singlehandedly, this was possibly one example.

Albion had slumped to 28 for six, and the schoolboys had victory in their sights. But cometh the hour, cometh the man - Jack Harper.

Cracking 10 fours and four sixes, Harper amassed 86 off 96 balls, adding 96 for the seventh wicket with Tim Ford (21) before some more late drama.

The ninth wicket fell at 141, leaving Dexter Marsh and Josh Cuttance to nervously poke and prod and score the winning runs.

Sam Angus did everything he could for Otago Boys', finishing with the excellent figures of six for 24.

Earlier, the schoolboys rather wasted the promising platform laid by openers Hunter Kindley (55) and Taine Bayly (24), though Jackson Miller added some late juice with a brisk 38.

Spinner Nick Beard led the Albion bowlers with five for 46.

Uni Grange 159 for nine dec lost to Green Is 161 for five by five wickets

Green Island again got valuable contributions out of its consistent stalwarts as it moved to a solid victory at Sunnyvale.

Mark Joyce (four for 45) and Dion Lobb (four for 57) did the damage with the ball, although things could have been a lot worse for University Grange, which was 79 for eight before James McMillan (53) and Sam Petersen (37 not out) staged a rescue act.

Green Island staggered slightly as it chased the 160 it needed for victory, but a patient Marcel Mckenzie (63 not out off 100 balls) and Bradley Scott (38 not out off 62) put their heads down and saw it through.

Chris Beck grabbed a four wicket bag for University Grange.
