Cricket: North Otago battles

The North Otago bowling attack faces a big challenge today, the second day of the Hawke Cup challenge being played at Rangiora.

North Otago won the toss and decided to bat first but lost opener Glynn Cameron in the second over.

Lachie Kingan added 25 runs with Jeremiah Shields and 28 invaluable runs with Duncan Drew but was dismissed early in the second session, for 35.

Of the remaining batsmen, only Francois Mostert (62) and Nathan Smith (23) showed any resilience before the final wicket fell at 179 in the 80th over.

The New Zealand under-19 left arm spinner Jeremy Benton took five for 61 off 25 overs, while right arm opening bowler Will Williams, a member of the Canterbury squad, claimed three for 17 off 16 overs.

At stumps Canterbury Country was 67 for one, 112 runs in arrears, with nine wickets in hand.

Liam Bartholomeusz was unbeaten on 41 and Jack Boyle on seven.

Mostert had taken one for 32 for North Otago.
