Four million New Zealanders will burst with pride when the Black Caps play Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground tomorrow - and it will be a particularly special occasion for two proud sons of Dunedin. On the eve of the Cricket World Cup final, New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson sent this message to Otago Daily Times readers.

It's hard to imagine that it's come down to this.

Two blokes from working class Dunedin, playing a part in arguably the biggest game of cricket in New Zealand history.

But here we are in Melbourne on the eve of the World Cup final - and what a ride it's been so far.

Can we just say how fantastic it's been over the past month or so, not just for the two of us but the entire Black Caps squad and management.

The support we've received from all around the country has been immense, and nowhere has it been more enthusiastic and encouraging than in the Otago-Southland region.

People have come from far and wide to show their true colours and we want you to know we've received the message loud and clear. You're behind us; we get that - we can feel it even from here.

When the guys walk out on to the MCG tomorrow,we know we'll be super-conscious of you all standing beside us.

So, to everyone in the Otago Daily Times catchment, may we just say one more time - thank you.

We hope we can repay you tomorrow but whatever the result, we want you to understand that we'll give our guts and try to make you proud.

As far as we are concerned, you will always be home; you will always be family.

Thanks again - we love having you on our side.

Regards,

Mike and Brendon
