Cricket: Uni-Grange future uncertain

The future of University-Grange's senior team hangs in the balance.

The club did not take a full part in the Dunedin senior competition last summer, prompting calls to trim the competition to six teams.

A review of the tournament's structure has led to two proposals being tabled.

One proposal would exclude University-Grange altogether, with just six clubs contesting the senior competition.

The other idea, which has been put forward by University-Grange, would see the club contest an eight-team spring series which would run for five weeks beginning on the last weekend of September.

An Otago under-19 team would join University-Grange to make up the numbers. Once that competition was over, University-Grange and the Otago under-19 team would drop out and leave the the other six clubs to continue.

There is no provision for Otago Country or Otago Boys' High School to be part of senior cricket this summer.

Otago Country replaced the defunct Pelichet Bay team in 2010-11 and has competed in the first round of the tournament as part of its preparation for the Hawke Cup.

Otago Boys' High School joined the competition in 2013-14 to help remove the bye.

Dunedin Cricket Association operations manager Tim O'Sullivan said club delegates would vote for their favoured option at a meeting on August 11.

He felt the development of a spring series would allow University-Grange, which has struggled to field a team during the university holidays, to remain part of the competition while it rebuilds its player base.

Should clubs adopt the other option, the door would remain open for a return, but O'Sullivan felt it would be a lot harder for the club to rebuild.

It was proposed the spring series would run for two years, which would give the club time to ''regroup'', O'Sullivan said.
