Cricket: Otago Boys beats King's for McCullum Cup

Otago Boys retained the McCullum Cup for the third straight year with a 42-run win over King's High School at Culling Park yesterday.

Both sides were unbeaten in Pool A going into the final round match yesterday afternoon after dispatching Waitaki Boys, Southland Boys and John McGlashan College over the previous day and a-half.

Some games on Thursday were restricted to 10 or eight overs per side due to rain, while other matches were played in full.

A strong 59 off 51 balls from Jarryd Taig at the top of the order was the backbone of Otago Boys' innings as it reached 107 for seven from its 20 overs.

Patrick Arnold was the pick of the King's bowlers, snaring four for 13 off his four overs.

Otago Boys' kept taking wickets regularly and King's High School never got going, eventually losing all 10 wickets for 65 runs in the 16th over.

Jamie Crawford top-scored at No10, scoring 19, but an all-round bowling performance from Will Hunter (three for 22), Declan Sua (two for 7) and Sam Angus (two for 5) secured Otago Boys' win.

The plate - competed for by seven teams in Pool B - was claimed by Kavanagh College, with three wins and a loss in its four games. Its only loss came in a cross-pool game against John McGlashan College.

Southland Boys' all-rounder Liam McWilliam was named the tournament MVP.
