Cricket: Kaikorai's good form carries on

Kaikorai has emerged as the team to beat following its 71 run thumping of Green Island at Sunnyvale on Saturday.

Kaikorai 187 for six beat Green Island 116 by 71 runs

The game was reduced to 20 overs a side, after heavy rain left the playing surface sodden.

Matt Hunter got the unbeaten Kaikorai off to a rapid start. He smashed four sixes - two of them lovely shots back down the ground - on his way to 43 from 32 deliveries.

Otago all rounder Josh Finnie, who missed the Volts' opening Plunket Shield game due to illness, kept the scoreboard fizzing along with 51 from 27 balls.

The 18 year old has a dazzling array of shots but had to bow to Iain Robertson, who was in even more potent form with 60 from 25 deliveries.

Robertson used the wind to hit down the ground and whacked seven sixes in his 28min stay.

Kaikorai's decision to stack the batting paid off, as the side posted a formidable 187 for six.

Green Island made a useful start through Gregor Croudis (32) and Christi Viljoen (25), who looked threatening.

But Geordie Scott keeps taking wickets this summer and added another five to his impressive haul. The medium pacer took five for 20 to help dismiss Green Island for 116. He bowled nice and straight and full enough to hit the stumps.

The game got off to a sombre start, when the teams observed a minute's silence for Green Island and Dunedin Cricket Association life member Peter Graham, who died on Friday.

Taieri 111 lost to Carisbrook Dunedin 114 for three by seven wickets

Carisbrook Dunedin trio Chris Ware, Taine Bayly and Rhys Phillips took three wickets apiece to help their side dispatch Taieri at Tonga Park.

Not much went right for the visitors. Simon Cromarty added 44 at the top but extras (19) were the next highest total in the innings, which tells a rather sorry tale.

Taieri's last eight wickets fell for just 44 runs. The collapse was in part down to some impatience, but Carisbrook Dunedin also bowled well.

Ware was more threatening in his second stint, once the pitch had dried out and he could run in harder. He generated some good pace and Bayly was effective, as well.

He picked up the key wicket of Cromarty, while Phillips chipped in with three quick wickets at the end to help wrap up the innings.

Taieri might have been in with a slim chance of winning had it picked up the wickets of Phillips, Brad Rodden and Sean Eathorne cheaply. But Phillips blazed 27 from 25, Rodden chipped in with 23 and Eathorne helped seal the win with an undefeated 16.

North East Valley 160 beat Albion 107 by 53 runs

What is going on with Albion? The defending champion is winless after three games. No one is hitting the panic button yet but Albion ought to have been able to chase down North East Valley's modest total of 160.

From Albion's perspective, it should have been chasing 20 or even 30 fewer runs but Chris Beck (47) and Jamie Murley (24) added 51 for the eighth wicket, which proved crucial.

The Swans were struggling at 87 for seven and facing the very real prospect of being bowled out for under 100.

Bradley Thomson (three for 35) and Jack Harper (four for 22) certainly did their part. And Josh Cuttance (one for 31) was perhaps unlucky not to get more reward. Albion did concede 24 extras, though.

Beck's counterattack helped his side slip out of the noose. His 47 came off 54 balls and he had good support from the experienced Murley.

Beck also made a telling contribution with the ball. He took two for 14 and one of those wickets was the dangerous Taylor Cumberland.

Cumberland had batted patiently for 39 before playing a loose drive and holing out.

Tim Ford (21) provided some resistance in the middle but his departure at 99 for six triggered a rapid collapse and the final four wickets added only eight runs.

Left arm spinner Ryan Adam was the main beneficiary with four for six from four overs at the end.
