Cricket: Phillips wanted for twenty20

Carisbrook-Dunedin legspinner Rhys Phillips has been named in a 13-strong squad for Otago's opening two twenty20 matches against Central Districts in New Plymouth this week.

The 27-year-old carpenter was called into the Otago Plunket Shield team towards the end of last summer and played three games.

He has won selection ahead of left-arm spinner Nick Beard, who has been one of Otago's most frugal twenty20 bowlers in the past three or four seasons.

However, Beard's action was ruled illegal following last summer's twenty20 tournament and he skipped the rest of the season to remodel his action.

That action has been cleared and he played in Otago's opening two Plunket Shield games last month.

He has taken six wickets but has also been quite expensive.

Black Caps offspinner Nathan McCullum and all-rounder Josh Finnie are the other slow bowling options in the squad.

McCullum, who announced last week he will retire from international cricket at the end of the season, is captaining the Volts in the twenty20 competition.

He has significantly more talent at his disposal than stand-in captain Sam Wells had last month, with the return of the New Zealand A foursome of Neil Wagner, Jacob Duffy, Derek de Boorder and Michael Bracewell.

Former Auckland batsman Anaru Kitchen is poised to make his debut for Otago.

The aggressive top-order player broke a bone in his hand during the preseason.

His return from injury bolsters a formidable batting line-up which also features Neil Broom, Brad Wilson and Bracewell.

Seamer Warren Barnes has also been named.

His Otago debut has been delayed by an ankle and a back complaint but he bowled with good pace during a trial match in Mosgiel on Friday.

• The draw for the second round of the club knockout trophy has been released.

Albion will host Marist at Tonga Park.

Taieri will play Queenstown at Brooklands Park No1.

Otago Boys High Schools meet the in-form Kaikorai at Sunnyvale, while North East Valley will play Green Island at Brooklands Park No 2.

In the first round, Taieri defeated Appleby by 95 runs, Queenstown beat Milton by 163 runs, Albion thrashed Metro by 198 runs and Green Island smashed Carisbrook-Dunedin by eight wickets.
