Cricket: Aussie series provides true gauge - Boult

New Zealand speedster Trent Boult says their three-Test series against arch rivals Australia will be a timely gauge of their two-year resurgence.

Australia will field one of their most inexperienced line-ups following a spate of post-Ashes retirements including skipper Michael Clarke.

But Boult said the tour would provide a yardstick of how far the Black Caps had come.

New Zealand have been undefeated in their last seven Test series - which includes nine Test wins and only four losses out of 17 Tests - a run dating back to 2013.

"The guys have a good blueprint on how we want to play the game," Boult said ahead of the first Test at the Gabba starting on Thursday.

"I could not think of better opposition to test where we are at."
