Sri Lanka is hardly carrying plenty of form going into the first test - starting in Dunedin on Thursday - after a subdued effort in its only warm-up game in Queenstown.

The three-day game petered out to a draw on Saturday - they always do on these tours - but Sri Lanka did not have the upper hand over the President's XI, a side made up of mostly promising youngsters.

At the end of the second day, the home side was nearly 100 runs ahead and still had three wickets in hand in its first innings. Sri Lanka has earlier been bowled out for 193 in its first innings.

The President's XI then kicked on at the Queenstown Events Centre on Saturday and ended up declaring on 399 for eight wickets.

Tim Johnston scored 62 while Shawn Hicks made an unbeaten 79 as the duo had no issues with the Sri Lankan attack.

Promising right arm paceman Dushmantha Chameera picked up four wickets for the visiting side although they came at an expensive rate.

Sri Lanka then used the rest of the day as batting practice and finished up on 226 for six wickets, off 71 overs.

Udara Jayasundera knocked up 63 off 153 balls.

He left the batting crease to give someone else a chance but when the Sri Lankans lost a couple of quick wickets, he came back in and provided some solidity to the Sri Lankan side.

Skipper Angelo Mathews hit an unbeaten half century to aid his side's cause.

Neil Wagner picked up one wicket in the second innings - giving him four for the match - and will be hoping for some juice in the University Oval wicket to give him a chance to make the playing XI for the test.

The Sri Lankans arrived in Dunedin yesterday while the New Zealand team will assemble from all parts of New Zealand today to start training tomorrow.
