Cricket: Nicholls given chance on international scene

Canterbury batsman Henry Nicholls has been named in the Black Caps one-day squad for the first three one-day internationals against Sri Lanka later this month.

The 24-year-old left-hander has been in impressive form during the past 12 months and has earned his opportunity, Black Caps coach Mike Hesson said.

"During the New Zealand A campaign, he was exceptional - certainly a standout player in that campaign in all forms of the game.

"He is a player who we see has got class and he is a player who we want to expose to the international scene sooner rather than later.''

Nicholls joins a reasonably predictable cast.

There is no Trent Boult, though.

He will be rested for the opening three games and Tim Southee will skip the first two matches before replacing Canterbury's Matt Henry for the third ODI.

"Both Trent and Tim, by the time we get to the last test and the start of the one-day series, will have played five tests in a row. So it is a long season and we need some fresh legs ... steaming in come that first ODI at Hagley.''

World Cup hero Grant Elliott was not considered because of injury but is targeting a return to domestic cricket for Wellington in the one-day tournament.

Otago captain Nathan McCullum is "unlikely to be considered for one-day cricket''.

At the moment, with his body, we see T20 probably about where his limit is.

He has had a lot of back issues but we've also got some other really promising spinners.

"We are looking to the tournaments ahead - Champions Trophy and so fourth - and Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi will need some opportunities.''

All-rounders Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson have both struggled with back complaints.

They are both back playing but as specialist batsmen and have not been selected.

Anderson could come into consideration as a specialist batsman for the two twenty20 matches early next year.

"But we are hopeful towards the back end of the season [Anderson] could play a role with the ball. In terms of James, he is a long way off bowling. It is just nice to see him back playing cricket again.''
