Otago all-rounder Josh Finnie has been named as captain of the New Zealand team for the ICC under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh.

Finnie, who made his debut for Otago last season, and looks to be a player of some promise, will captain a 15-strong squad, which also includes North Otago pace bowler Nathan Smith.

Smith, a year 12 pupil at Waitaki Boys' High School, also looks a player of potential and has already played for the Otago A squad.

The only down side for Smith's selection is he will miss some Hawke Cup games for North Otago.

Finnie has not played for Otago in the past couple of games because of a foot injury but should be right for the tournament.

The New Zealand under-19 squad is made up of five players from Auckland, three from Central Districts, two each from Otago, Wellington and Canterbury, and one from Northern Districts.

Included is Auckland opener Glenn Phillips, who made a century against Otago in a one-day game earlier this week.

Finnie will be going into his second under-19 World Cup, having made the New Zealand side in 2014 when the tournament was played in the United Arab Emirates.

The side will head to Dubai before the tournament starts to play warm-up games against Australia and Pakistan.

The tournament features 16 teams in four pools and New Zealand has powerhouse nations India and Australia in its pool.

The other team in its pool is Nepal, which New Zealand plays in its first game at the tournament on January 28.
