Cricket: Snedden’s five-wicket bag sees Albion home

Albion right-armer Michael Snedden has put his shoulder injury behind him with a five-wicket bag to help his side defeat the in-form Kaikorai by 26 runs at Bishopscourt.

Albion 141 beat Kaikorai 115 by 26 runs

Albion could muster only a paltry 141, Daniel Duke top-scoring with 63 from 55 balls and No9 Dexter March adding a valuable 32.

Kaikorai was 74 for two in reply and seemingly on course for victory until Snedden rediscovered his mojo with five for 24.

Snedden injured his shoulder during a tour match against Sri Lanka in December 2014.

His recovery took the best part of 12 months. He returned to the bowling crease last month for short stints. He is still operating at about 75% according to Albion captain Tim Ford.

The tall medium-pacer made a rusty start, conceding 18 runs from his first three overs. But thereafter Snedden was on target, taking five for six during his next six overs, including the key wickets of Geordie Scott and Iain Robertson.

The Kaikorai pair have been instrumental in the their side's success this season and Robertson's departure, in particular, left Kaikorai struggling. His team was eventually all out for 115.

Only Dan Sharples (28), Rhys Bayly (24) and Josh Preston (19) were able to make much impact.

While Scott and Robertson missed out with the bat, they picked up four wickets apiece.

Taieri 156 beat Carisbrook-Dunedin 122 by 34 runs

Taieri captain Jack Hunter took six wickets and top-scored with the bat to lead his side to a 34-run win against Carisbrook-Dunedin at Tonga Park.

The Otago medium-pacer rescued his side from a tight spot at 60 for five with a valuable knock of 40.

His innings helped Taieri reach a modest 156 which proved a winning score.

Opener Regan Flaws added 31 and Josh Tasman-Jones made a solid contribution with 33.

Left-armer Chris Ware accounted for four of the top five batsmen with a haul of four for 32, and Sean Eathorne proved useful with three for 16.

Carisbrook-Dunedin has been disappointing with the bat this season and failed to impress again.

Hunter sliced through the batting order, picking up the key wickets of Brad Rodden for 33 and Eathorne for four.

Tom Rutherford countered with 35 but also fell victim to Hunter, who then wrapped up the tail quick smart to finish with six for 21 from 11.5 overs. It was quite some spell.

Green Island 225 for nine dec beat North East Valley 79 by 146 runs

Remember this name: Blake Buttar-Scurr. He scored an undefeated hundred for Green Island to help his side beat North East Valley by 146 runs at Sunnyvale.

It was just his second senior game for the club and the 18-year-old came in to bat with his side's innings teetering at 12 for four. Moments later Brad Wilson was dismissed, leaving Green Island 14 for five.

But through solid defence and sensible aggression the young right-hander went about rebuilding the innings with a fabulous knock of 101 not out from 140 balls.

He drives down the ground well. He is quick to swivel into a pull shot and most importantly he seems to have a great temperament.

He had wonderful support from veteran all-rounder Mark Joyce. He came in at No9 and swatted 69 runs to help Green Island reach 225 for nine declared.

Jamie Murley took four for 45 and Keegan Harrison picked up three for 72. They bowled plenty in an effort to polish off Green Island quickly but were thwarted by Buttar-Scurr.

North East Valley's chase did not amount to much. Murley top-scored with 19 and Harrison (13) and Hamish O'Brien (16) made small contributions in a disappointing reply of 79.

Former Otago left-armer Blair Soper, who has been struggling to overcome a chronic shoulder problem, picked up four wickets, while Dion Lobb and Christi Viljoen grabbed two apiece.
