Cricket: Pitch condition sums up day

Kaikorai captain Iain Robertson described the state of the pitch at Bishopscourt on Saturday as a disgrace.

Kaikorai 121 beat Taieri 72 by 49 runs

‘‘It was under-prepared and soft'' the former Otago player said, adding chunks flew out when the ball struck the surface.

‘‘You had to hit out or get out - that was the policy everyone adopted, really,'' he said.

‘‘It was a waste of a weekend. You wait all week to play and it was a letdown to play on a pitch like that.''

Kaikorai stumbled through to 121, which turned out to be plenty. Ryan Duffy top-scored with 30 and Geordie Scott ripped through Taieri's batting line-up, taking seven for 37, to help dismiss Taieri for just 72.

He bowled straight, got some swing and the pitch did the rest.

Robertson felt Taieri was guilty of the terrible sin of trying to play proper cricket shots during its chase when it might have been better served swinging and hoping for the best.

Carisbrook-Dunedin 58 lost to Green Island 64 for two by eight wickets

Green Island veteran Mark Joyce had no such complaints about the surface at Sunnyvale.

His side struck a double blow in the opening over of the game, removing the dangerous Rhys Phillips and Brad Rodden.

The old master Dion Lobb claimed both scalps and went on to finish with six for 36, as Carisbrook-Dunedin capitulated to be all out for 58.

There were four ducks in the innings and Sean Eathorne top-scored with just 17.

Former Otago left-armer Blair Soper got among the wickets, too. He took three for seven from five overs and bowled with a bit more heat than in the previous week.

Green Island lost two wickets in pursuit of the minute total. Scott Simpson was trapped in front for 15 and Nathan Watt was caught out on 31. Chris Ware picked up both wickets.

To sum up Joyce, it was not much of a game.

Northeast Valley 95 lost to Albion 98 for seven by three wickets

Yes, another stunning game of club cricket. This one was closer, at least.

North East Valley was rolled for 95, Issac Gutschlag top-scoring with 20. Simon Murley managed 15 and opener Tom Griffin scored 17.

Josh Cuttance did the damage. The right arm medium pacer captured the wickets of both openers and helped polish off the tail with a haul of five for 18.

Jack Harper and Michael Snedden took two apiece, while Stu Malthus (23) and Tim Ford (39) put on 57 for the second wicket, to help secure the win.

The Eagles got the wobbles, though, losing six wickets for 17 runs. But Harper scored 22 not out to guide the side to victory. Albion is unbeaten in the Declaration Cup with three wins from three games.

Gutschlag was the pick of the Northeast Valley bowlers with four for 21 from seven overs.
