Cricket: Sparks lose by 10 wickets

The Otago Sparks were well-beaten by the Canterbury Magicians at Hagley Oval in Christchurch today, as the hosts romped to a ten-wicket win.

After being reduced to 85 for nine off their 20 overs, Otago were unable to quell the Canterbury opening pair who reached their target in 14.4 overs.

Opener Katey Martin was Otago's best with the bat, scoring 32 off 44 balls. She struggled to find partners however and only Morna Nielsen joined her in reaching double figures, with a score of 10.

Thamsyn Newton had the best return for Canterbury, taking three wickets for 13 runs and also effecting a run out. She claimed the scalps of Leigh Kasperek and newly-signed England international Laura Marsh in the same over, leaving Otago at 26 for three.

Frances Mackay took two for 18, while Lea Tahuhu claimed the prize wicket of Suzie Bates, dismissing the Otago captain for six in the third over.

It was a good day all round for Mackay, as she scored 40 not out, while Amy Satterthwaite made 42 not out.
