Cricket: First-innings loss for Otago Country

The Otago Country Hawke Cup team completed its season with a first-innings loss to the visiting Mid Canterbury over the weekend.

Mid Canterbury won the toss and batted on what turned out to be a typical Molyneux Park pitch and typically warm Alexandra conditions.

After being in a little trouble early on at five for 93, it recovered superbly to declare the innings closed at 365 for the loss of seven wickets after 82 overs.

Matt Tait compiled an outstanding 153 with excellent support from Ryan Cockburn's 103 not.

This pair added 165 for the sixth wicket.

Tom Myles, with three for 82, and Willie Miller, with two for 52, were the most successful of the home team's bowlers.

Otago Country could only muster 192 in reply, veteran Mark Knox leading the way with 44 and captain Cam Fawkner, contributing 39.

The pick of the visiting side's bowlers was Ryan Cockburn, who took three for 23 off his 18 overs.

Asked to follow on, the home team got through to 158 for four wickets off 63 overs when both captains agreed to end the match at 5.30pm.

The Country batsmen showed a lot more patience and commitment at the crease in the second innings with a fine 62 from the experienced Tim McCormick leading the way.

A pair of 29s from Sam Pringle and Barry White helped the home team to draw the match.

Harry Jones, with two for 24, led the bowling effort for Mid Canterbury.
