Cricket: Volts beaten by Wellington

The Otago Volts lost to the Wellington Firebirds by 102 runs on the final day of their Plunket Shield match at Queenstown today.

Entering the day Otago needed 378 runs to win with nine wickets in hand, having lost Brad Wilson, without score, before stumps last night.

Jimmy Neesham top-scored for the Volts with 65, while Derek de Boorder managed 50 not out, but the damage was done before they arrived.

Early wickets to Dane Hutchinson saw them stuttering at 61 for three, before Matthew Bacon claimed two more, leaving Otago at 107 for five, still needing 271 runs to win.

Bacon finished with three wickets for 27 runs off his 6.3 overs, while Hutchinson claimed three for 60.
