Middle-order batsman Polly Inglis helped the Otago Sparks finish the one-day competition on a positive note with a win against Wellington at the University Oval yesterday.

The 19-year-old posted a career high 60 with the bat to help her side overhaulWellington's total of 195 with two overs and three wickets spare.

Inglis got out with just five runs needed for victory but Megan Gibbs stayed the course with an undefeated 23. Earlier, Suzie Bates blazed 53 from 54 balls and Katey Martin scored a run-a-ball 30.

With both those players removed, the responsibility shifted to Inglis and she played the best innings of her provincial career.

Her previous high score was 41, so it was quite a step up and she was under plenty of pressure.

Earlier, Bates made the worst possible start with the ball. She dished up consecutive full tosses and Rachel Priest happily accepted the invitation to dispatch them for boundaries.

Georgia Clarke fought back for Otago, nicking out opener Suzie McDonald for four, while Bates eventually found a good length, bowling Priest for 24 and picking up the wicket of Liz Perry before she could get under way.

Wellington had slumped to 37 for three but Sophie Devine (43) and Erin Burns (29) added 66 for the fourth wicket to give the innings some substance.

Amelia Kerr (21), Jess McFadyen and Allex Evans (15) all played useful cameos to help their side close in on 200 runs.

Bates finished with three for 35 and England international Laura Marsh also picked up three.
