Cricket: Kaikorai wins Declaration Cup

Kaikorai won the Declaration Cup but had to settle for a draw in its final match of the tournament.

Kaikorai 284 for eight dec. drewwith Carisbrook-Dunedin 227 for nine

A dogged, undefeated innings of 70 from Taine Bayly helped Carisbrook-Dunedin hang on at Tonga Park on Saturday.

Kaikorai posted a challenging 284 for eight declared thanks to a century from fringe Otago top-order batsman Ryan Duffy (100 from 108) and a sparkling undefeated 59 from Hamish Robertson.

Carisbrook-Dunedin quickly switched from pursuit mode to survival mode after slumping to 21 for two in the ninth over.

Bayly played the anchor role with his 70 coming off 204 balls. But he had good support from Sean Eathorne (48 from 53) and Rhys Phillips (37 from 20) and batsman Max Chu, who had been ill all day but came out to bat at No 11.

Chu faced 34 balls for his four runs to help his side reach 227 for nine and stave off defeat.

Kaikorai captain Iain Roberston called on nine bowlers as he searched for a way to remove Bayly. He also had a fair crack himself, getting through 11 tight overs, including seven maidens, and taking one for five.

Duffy played a very different type of innings from Bayly. He was strong square of the wicket and dispatched 15 boundaries during his stay.

The draw was enough for Kaikorai to claim the Declaration Cup with 75 points from five games.

Green Island 71 lost to Albion 72 for four by six wickets

A failure by Green Island's batting line-up gifted Albion a comfortable victory at Sunnyvale.

The Swamp Rats could only muster a dismal total of 71 after being inserted on a bowler-friendly surface.

Only three Green Island batsmen got into double figures.

The wickets were shared around but Roald Badenhorst's two for 11 and Josh Cuttance's three for 21 represented very good value.

Veteran Green Island medium-pacer Dion Lobb made sure the chase was not a complete walkover. He nabbed three wickets from 6.1 overs but Albion reached the target in the 15th over with six wickets in hand.

Taieri 199 lost to North East Valley 200 for seven by three wickets

North East Valley finished its Declaration Cup campaign on a positive note with a gutsy three-wicket win against Taieri.

The match was an even contest with Taieri batting first and making 199.

Josh Tasman-Jones stood out with 55 and Jarrod Casey added 39. Regan Flaws (29) and Elliot Love (28) also made valuable contributions.

Medium-pacer Issac Gutschlag did the most damage with four for 38 from 6.5 overs, while Jamie Murley took two for 50 from 15 overs.

North East Valley's chase was a team effort. Otago batsman Anaru Kitchen (26) was one of five players who scored 25 or more to help chip away at the target.

Tom Griffin top-scored with 35 and Chris Beck added 33, while Gutschlag completed a good match with 29.

It took the Swans 61.4 overs to overhaul the target.
