The Hawke Cup has left the Waitaki.

After beating Buller earlier this month to gain the symbol of minor association cricket in the country, North Otago was beaten in its first defence.

The Penguins, as they are called, lost to Hawkes Bay by 152 runs at Milner Park in Oamaru on Saturday.

Hawkes Bay started the second day at 13 for two in the second innings with a lead of 10 but its top and bottom order batting

swung the game the Hawkes Bay way. Skipper and opening batsman Jacob Smith led the way with a confident 79 to give the innings impetus but apart from Indika Senarathne (36), it was left to Gilliam

Pretorious (59) and Liam Dudding (18) to feature in a 10th wicket stand of 66, which effectively took the game away from North Otago.

North Otago's Francois Mostert took four for 98 off 25 overs to give him eight wickets for the match.

The left-arm off-spin of North Otago captain Jordan Horrell earned him three for 66 while Stephan Grobler took two for 20 with his leg-spin as Hawkes Bay sailed on to 248.

Requiring 245 to win, North Otago was soon in trouble, losing opener Jeremiah Shields at four and the side tumbled to 60 for six with only Ben Cant (22) showing any form of ability to stay at the crease.

The Bay spin attack of Gilliam Pretorious, Ajaz Patel and Angus Schaw ripped through the North Otago line-up, which collapsed to be all out for 93. Schaw took four for 21, Patel bagged three for 21 and Pretorious gathered two for 15.

Hawkes Bay had dominated the bulk of the first session of the second day with Smith dominating the North Otago bowling attack. Some loose fielding did not help North Otago's cause.

Smith and Rupert Young added 91 runs for the third wicket before Young was dismissed for 20.

Hawkes Bay was 167 for six at lunch on the second day, an overall lead of 164 with four wickets in hand and even that would have been too much for North Otago.

North Otago was not helped by the absence of gun opening bowler Nathan Smith who was on duty for the North-South game in Wellington. He ended up being made 12th man in the capital game so did not play.
