Black Caps off spinner Mark Craig will not be running his fingers over a ball for at least the next six weeks.

The Otago all-rounder was struck on the right hand by a beamer from Auckland fast bowler Lachie Ferguson during a Plunket Shield match at the University Oval this morning.

He was forced to retire and went to hospital where an X-ray revealed he has broken a bone in his hand.

Otago coach Nathan King said Craig would be in a cast for the next six weeks and would miss the remainder of the Plunket Shield.

''It is a terrible result because in the last month he has actually bowled really well,'' King said.

''Just when he is starting to get back to his best this occurs.''

The incident had a big impact on the match as well. Otago was reduced to 10 batsman and Auckland held on to win by just 10 runs. Ferguson took the last wicket, bowling Derek de Boorder with a fabulous yorker to finish with five for 68.
