Cricket: Otago Boys’, Waitaki Boys’ in final

Otago Boys' High School will meet Waitaki Boys' High School in the final of the southern region of the Gillette Cup at Tonga Park today.

In the semifinals at Tonga Park yesterday, Waitaki Boys' compiled 199 off 45 overs against John McGlashan College as Nathan Smith hit 57.

The New Zealand under-19 player was also dangerous with the ball and conceded only 16 runs off his 10 overs.

The best bowling for McGlashan came from Pete Sangster, who took four wickets.

McGlashan made a poor start in reply, losing three wickets before reaching double figures but recovered somewhat before eventually being dismissed for 175 in the 47th over.

Ryan Whelan scored a half-century for McGlashan while Blake James took four wickets for Waitaki Boys'.

Otago Boys' scored a healthy 288 for nine wickets in its semifinal against Southland Boys' High School,

Hamish Kindley and Cameron McAuslan both scoring half-centuries.

Southland Boys' High School made a good start in reply and had a third-wicket partnership of 163. But once Otago Boys' High School took the third wicket, the southern side fell away and was dismissed for 238.

Declan Sua took four wickets for Otago Boys', as did Tim Horton.

The winner of today's final will head to the Gillette Cup finals in Palmerston North at the end of the year.

In the playoff for fifth and sixth, King's High School had a seven-wicket win over St Kevin's College after it rolled the Oamaru school for 67 inside 16 overs.
