The $750,000 upgrade of the University Oval embankments is tracking well and is due to be completed by the end of next month, weather permitting.

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Mike Coggan said the first layer of the embankment, rock and clay, had been laid.

Work was being done to put in the second layer, fill dirt, which would be followed by a final layer of topsoil then grass seedlings.

While the project was tracking well, there was a possibility it could take longer than expected, Coggan said.

"There is a chance if we start seeing frosts, we won't have [grass] seeding in until early spring.

"It all depends on how long it takes to finish the soil.''

A 2m retaining wall had been put in place around most of the ground, Coggan said.

The area would flatten out at the top of the wall and a temporary fence would be put in place.

That would come down and temporary seating would be put at the top of the embankment for one-day internationals, he said.

The retaining wall would be 6m in the northwestern corner, heading towards the Sargood Centre.

The eastern embankment would be 10m further back than initially planned so marquees could be erected there, Coggan said.
