The Otago Cricket Association will engage a global recruitment company in the search for a new coach.

New Zealand Cricket and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association will also be involved with the OCA very keen to get the process right.

Global Elite Sports Recruitment and Consultancy will lead the hunt for suitable candidates.

"That first advertisement will go out to the marketplace quite shortly,'' OCA chief executive Mike Coggan said.

"And because we are looking to attract a strong and ready-to-go head coach with experience, we have also engaged NZC and the NZCPA to have representation on our appointments panel.''

Applications will close May 27, which leaves the association two weeks to find a replacement for Nathan King.

King resigned last month during a post-season review. He was a year into his two-year contract but his position had become untenable.

It is understood more than a dozen players provided critical performance appraisals.

There was also a feeling within certain Otago cricket circles that King's appointment had been rushed and he might have been better to have spent another year or two as assistant coach.

King took over from Dimitri Mascarenhas, who held the role for a year before accepting a position as New Zealand bowling coach.

While King had to apply for the position, a source revealed there was a dearth of quality applicants.

Had the net been cast a bit wider, Otago Cricket may have avoided what was an embarrassing episode.

All going well, a new coach could be in place by as early as late June but that will depend on the availability of the successful applicant.

The player contracting process will have to be farmed out in the meantime.

A subcommittee will be put together to manage that process and to oversee the player's winter training programmes.

Some short-term coaching contracts could also be offered to help fill the void.

The six major associations will announce the first round of contract offers on June 28.

The second-round announcements are made a little later with the contracting process due to be complete by July 19.

Coggan declined to comment on the proposed restructure planned for Otago Cricket.
