Cricket: Club batsmen find big runs hard to come by

Runs were hard to come by in senior club cricket on Saturday as the ball dominated the bat.

Only two batsmen across the four games got past the half-century mark, as many players got starts but failed to push on.

Pelichet Bay was the worst in the batting stakes, only managing to get to 74 in reply to Taieri's 211.

Nick Eathorne had the most impressive batting performance of the weekend, anchoring Carisbrook-Dunedin's successful chase of a modest North East Valley target with 75.

University-Grange, which had wrapped up the one-day title last week, with a game to spare, had a forgettable finish, losing by five wickets to Green Island.

Albion also had a comfortable five-wicket win over Kaikorai after an impressive effort by its bowlers.

University-Grange and Carisbrook-Dunedin qualified for the knock-out semifinals next month while Green Island will play a Southland club side to decide another semifinalist.

The other semifinalist will be decided by a game between club sides from North Otago and Otago Country.

The Dunedin competition will switch to franchise twenty/20 cricket next week.

Albion 152-5 beat Kaikorai 148 by five wickets at Logan Park

Kaikorai was on the back foot straight away to Albion and never recovered.

The side was lucky to get to 100 after losing its eighth wicket at 93.

But some good hitting at the bottom of the order by Craig Sneddon with 35, increased the score to 148.

Nick Beard grabbed three cheap wickets, along with PJ Cairns.

In reply, Kaikorai had a sniff of a chance when Otago representative Shaun Haig was dismissed cheaply but chasing such a small target, Albion managed to produce a couple of decent partnerships to get home.

Beard backed up his bowling effort with an unbeaten 39 as his side won in the 38th over.

Taieri 211 beat Pelichet Bay 74 by 137 runs at Brooklands

Taieri was too good in all departments for a disappointing Pelichet Bay outfit.

Batting first Taieri did not bat out its 50 overs, being all out in the 48th over, but it posted a competitive enough total, with no player getting past 35.

Pelichet Bay did not help its cause by bowling no fewer than 25 wides.

In reply, Pelichet Bay started off all right but lost five wickets within five runs, with Reuben Simpson doing the damage, nabbing four wickets in the middle order.

Brad Frost also helped himself with three wickets.

The visiting side never recovered and was all out in the 26th over.

Caris-Dunedin 171-3 beat NE Valley 170 by seven wickets at Tonga Park

Nick Eathorne set up the win for the Carisbrook-Dunedin side and it was finished off by his brother Sean.

Nick Eathorne opened and scored a patient 75, combining in a 88-run partnership with Tony McEntyre, with Eathorne scoring the bulk of the runs.

Sean Eathorne combined with Rob Poulson to get the side to the target in the 37th over.

In the North East Valley innings, wickets fell at regular intervals.

Otago wicketkeeper Derek de Border opened but was bowled when set on 26 while Darren Broom also got under way but was out on 31.

No-one else got going in the North East Valley side, with Brad Hamill the best of the Carisbrook-Dunedin bowlers.

Green Island 174-5 beat Uni Grange 173 by five wickets at Sunnyvale

Mark Joyce helped get his side over the line as Green island won its game with more than 10 overs to spare.

Andrew Hore (30) and Michael Bracewell (24) got the visiting side off to a good start but once they departed the innings floundered, and it was only some good hitting by Craig Smith with 46 that got the side past 150.

An 84-run fifth-wicket partnership between Joyce 53, and Kyle Lamont 28, set up the win for Green Island, after Scott Simpson had been dismissed without scoring.

Anthony Bullick tried hard for the visitors and grabbed a couple of wickets but it was too hard to defend such a small total.
