Cricket: Gory days behind him, Flynn in it for the runs

Daniel Flynn would like to be remembered for runs rather than the grizzly image of him trotting off Old Trafford with a blood-splattered mouth and two teeth missing.

The nuggety left hander would also like to settle the score with England pace bowler James Anderson.

It was a painful introduction to his international career.

But after just two tests he was already being labelled a gritty and gutsy cricketer.

Flattering - but he would trade the compliments for runs in the test series against Pakistan, which begins in Dunedin on Tuesday.

"Hopefully, I'll be remembered for runs rather than something like that," Flynn said.

"I'm sure our paths will cross again," he added, referring to Anderson.

With middle order batsman Jesse Ryder injured, the selection panel of Glenn Turner, Mark Greatbatch and Daniel Vettori have the opportunity to shuffle around the top five.

There is talk in-form Otago skipper Craig Cumming could come into the team, with incumbent opener Martin Guptill dropping to No 3 and Flynn shifting to No 5.

However, Cumming missed a golden opportunity to press his claim when he was twice dismissed cheaply in the three-day warm-up match against Pakistan at the Queenstown Events Centre this week.

Another, perhaps less disruptive option, would be to replace Ryder with Wellington batting all-rounder Grant Elliott.

Flynn's spot should be safe.

He made 49 in the first innings and got a good look at the Pakistan attack.

He also survived a testing period last night and will resume today.

Still, he will be sweating on the announcement like everybody else.

"I think you are always nervous until you hear your name read out. But with regards to the team and the line-up, I'm not sure. We'll see what they say."

Flynn said he would bat No 5 if required but wants to make the No 3 spot his own.

Pakistan resumed day two of its three-day warm-up match against a New Zealand Invitation team on 14 for one chasing 235 for a first innings win.

Imran Farhat (52) and Fawad Alam (77) put on 97 for the second wicket, but the tourists' innings, which had shown so much promise, started to unravel.

Salman Butt went for 11 and the captain Mohammad Yousuf was caught by the sub on 21.

Some lusty hitting by back-up wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed (37) and fast bowler Abdur Rauf (26) saw Pakistan reach 286.

The wickets were shared
