Cricket: Broom ton leads Otago to victory

It is high time Neil Broom was promoted to the test team, Volts coach Mike Hesson says.

Hesson's comments come after the in-form batsman led Otago to a five-wicket win over Auckland, with his third century in as many matches.

Broom, who is in the middle of a purple patch which has seen him amass 566 runs at an average of 94.33, compiled a mature, unbeaten 152.

In a topsy-turvy match, it proved the difference between the two sides.

"He is batting as well as he ever has and he is certainly ready to go to the next level," Hesson said, shortly after Broom swept a delivery to the boundary to help Otago peel off the 314 runs it needed to win the Plunket Shield match.

"That is the best I've seen him bat in terms of maturity and to see it through to the end was a fine effort."

Broom has played 16 ODIs for the Black Caps and nine international twenty/20 matches, without much success.

But he has been used down the order, whereas Hesson believes Broom is better suited to coming in earlier so he can get set before he tees off.

"As long as they give him a chance to bat the way he can, higher up the order, I think he'll do very well."

The 26-year-old right hander also helped rewrite the history books by sharing in a record Otago sixth-wicket stand against Auckland, of 162, with Leighton Morgan.

The unbroken stand eclipsed the previous mark of 145, which was shared by Shaun Haig and Derek de Boorder and Matt Horne and Martyn Croy, and was just three runs short of the Otago's sixth-wicket record partnership against all opponents, of 165, held by Glenn Turner and Warren Lees.

Otago resumed yesterday on 188 for five, needing a further 126 runs to win.

The way wickets had been falling in clusters, the game was also there for Auckland to claim.

"We didn't have a lot of experience in that bottom half, so 126 was always going to be tough. We needed a lot out [Broom and Morgan]. Leighton Morgan's efforts certainly can't be under-rated. He got out of a sick bed to play and to bat through was very commendable."

Struggling with a vomiting and diarrhoea bug, Morgan spent Monday morning back at the hotel.

But with Otago losing two early wickets he rose and made his way to the ground.

He got through a difficult period on Monday night and resumed yesterday on 17.

He brought up his seventh half-century and had reached 71 when Broom hit the winning runs.

Otago's task was made a little easier with pace bowler Pieter Erasmus picking up a groin injury and unable to bowl yesterday.

• Pakistan all-rounder Yasir Arafat is set to make his Otago debut.

The clever seam bowler and dangerous lower order batsman has been named in a 13-strong Otago squad for the one-dayer against Auckland at Colin Maiden Park tomorrow.

Otago: Craig Cumming (c), Yasir Arafat, Nick Beard, Derek de Boorder, Darren Broom, Neil Broom, Anthony Bullick, Ian Butler, Sean Eathorne, Shaun Haig, Warren McSkimming, Hamish Rutherford, Neil Wagner.
