Cricket: University-Grange beats Alexandra

University-Grange secured a place in the Otago final of the national club championship following a convincing nine-wicket win over Alexandra in the semifinal at Logan Park yesterday.

Offspinner Mitch Rutherford took four for 20 and left-arm seamer Craig Smith took three for nine from seven overs to help dismiss the visitors for 115.

Grange made light work of the chase with Mark Collie (54) and Jesse Simpson (32) combining in an unbroken stand of 95 for the second wicket.

Danny van der Voort top-scored for Alexandra with 41 and Cameron Rutherford chipped in with 34.

Grange will play Green Island in the Otago final next year, with the winner progressing to the finals week in Auckland.

The Central Knights split their twenty/20 matches this weekend but remain on top of the senior franchise competition with 20 points.

The Knights lost their opening game to the Eastern Beachers by 10 wickets but bounced back to beat North West Bears by six wickets in the afternoon.

Eastern Beachers held on to beat the Saddle Hill Steamers by one run in a dramatic match in the afternoon to take maximum points for their two games.

They are in third place with 13 points.

The Saddle Hill Steamers won their opening game against the North West Bears and remain in second place with 18 points.

The Bears lost both matches and are in last place on three points.

North West Bears 103 (Craig Sneddon 27 no, R Ritchie three for 19) lost to Saddle Hill Steamers 104 for two2 (J Sheed 44 not out A Harris 29 not out).

Central Knights 100 (Craig Smith 32 no, Nick Beard three for 13, Mark Craig two for 18) lost to Eastern Beachers 106/0 (Jamie Glenn 56 no, Sean Eathorne 43 no).

North West Bears 94 (M Waddington three for three) lost to Central Knights 95 for four.

Eastern Beachers 152 for four (Greg Todd 50) beat Saddle Hill Steamers 15 for four (Anthony Harris 57, Scott Simpson 46)
