Otago was overwhelmed by Central Districts in the play-off for third at the national under-19 championships staged in Auckland during the past week.

Led by captain Ben Smith, who scored 104, Central punished the Otago attack, scoring 251 for eight.

In reply, Otago slumped to 84 all out in just the 19th over.

Gillette young cricketer of the year Adam Milne was the chief destroyer with four for 30.

Despite the heavy loss, Otago under-19 coach Mark Bracewell said his side had played some good cricket, and several individuals had enhanced their reputations at the tournament.

"Every kid contributed really well at some stage."

Green Island left armer and Otago Boys High School pupil Blair Soper was one of the leading wicket-takers.

"He ended up with 18 wickets, which was an outstanding effort, and he bowled really well. The tough thing for Blair was he just came straight from the Gillette Cup, so he basically ended up playing 10 days of cricket in 12 days. He showed a lot of ticker to keep going."

Opening batsman Michael Bracewell was the standout performer with the bat.

He was run out without facing a ball in the final match but until then had compiled innings of 37, 42, 54, 80 and 71 at an average of 47.33.

He also took 12 wickets with his right-arm medium pacers, and was selected in the New Zealand squad to compete in the under-19 World Cup next month.

A former wicketkeeper, the New Zealand under-19 squad member has given up the gloves to concentrate on his batting for the time being, his father and coach Mark Bracewell said.

Northeast Valley batsman Daniel Power also scored more than 200 runs during the tournament and had a top score of 65.

The team highlight was a fabulous chase where Otago scored 280 for eight to overhaul Auckland's effort of 279.

Canterbury won the tournament, beating Auckland by six wickets in the final.

It was its fifth championship win in the 14-year history of the event.

The South Islanders dismissed Auckland for 194.

Brad Chemaly top-scored for Auckland with 73 and for Canterbury Theo Van Woerkom returned outstanding figures of six for 26.

Canterbury paced its reply superbly, reaching its target in the 43rd over for the loss of four wickets.

Tom Latham continued his excellent form with the bat, scoring 77, and was well supported by Cole McConchie on 62.

Wellington recorded a comfortable win over Northern Districts to win the play-off for fifth and sixth.
