Cricket: Knights cement top spot with win over Bears

Central Knights consolidated their spot at the top of the franchise tournament with a narrow 11-run win over the North West Bears on Saturday.

The win lifted the Knights to 25 points.

The Saddle Hill Steamers lost some ground after they failed to chase down Eastern Beaches' modest total of 165 but they remain in second place with 19 points from Eastern Beaches on 18 and the North West Bears, who are last with just four points.

Cieran McMeekan top-scored with 65 to help the Knights post 261 for six.

Earlier, Sam Wells and (35) and Mark Collie (47) shared an opening stand of 80 and Leighton Morgan and James McMillan chipped in with scores of 35 and 27 respectively.

Jesse Ruwhiu bowled a tight five-over spell, taking one for 17, and Scott Hawkins took one for 23 from eight overs.

Ruwhiu capped off a good day with an undefeated innings of 57 as he tried to get the Bears past a challenging target.

Charlie Hendry (32) and Russell Thomas (40) combined in an opening stand of 80 runs and Colin Aitken scored 39 batting at No 4.

Otago fast bowler James McMillan slowed the Bears' progress with four for 52 and Mitch Rutherford took one for 44 from 10 overs.

In the other match, Rhys Phillips took six for 22 from 6.1 overs to seal a 29-run win for Eastern Beaches over the Saddle Hill Steamers.

Eastern batted first with only Shaun Haig really getting under way.

The Otago batsman cracked 80 before Ben Kidston sneaked a delivery past his defence.

Saddle Hill appeared on target to overhaul Eastern's total of 165 but lost seven wickets for 13 runs.

Mark Joyce was the key wicket.

He seemingly had his side on course for victory but was undone on 55 by Phillips.

Earlier, Jordan Sheed offered some resistance, scoring 37, and Jamie Munroe contributed 23.

But Phillips' devastating spell caused Saddle Hill to collapse from 123 for three to be all out for 136.

Otago top-order batsman Greg Todd missed out with the bat but bowled a tidy 10-over spell for Eastern, taking two for 22.

University-Grange booked itself a place in the national club championships with a comprehensive 76-run win over Green Island at Brooklands yesterday.

Grange off-spinner Mitch Rutherford bowled a superb spell, taking four for 24 from 10 overs to help dismiss Green Island for 146.

Otago seamer James McMillan bowled with good pace and took three for 28 from 9.5 overs.

Jordan Sheed top-scored for Green Island with 24 and experienced campaigner Jeremy Scott dug in with an undefeated 20.

Green Island was unable to establish a partnership of any note and never threatened Grange's total of 222.

Earlier, former Otago batsman Andrew Hore got Grange off to a brilliant start, smashing 53 and combining in a 93-run stand with Jesse Simpson (38).

Classy all-rounder Sam Wells held the middle order together with a knock of 41 and McMillan chipped in with 21.

Spinner Mark Joyce was the pick of the Green Island bowlers, taking two for 28 from 10 overs.

The national club championships will be staged in Auckland in April.
