A superb 112 by Otago Country batsman Braydon Hill and 92
from fellow batsman James Pyle helped their side to a
first-innings win over Mid-Canterbury in its second Hawke Cup
outing of the season.
Batting first on a flat Molyneux Park track, Otago Country
amassed a very competitive 372 all out thanks to both Hill
and Pyle who combined for 29 boundaries, three of those
coming in the form of sixes from Hill.
Ronnie Kotcamp was also in the runs making 42 but it was his
contribution alongside Hill that was crucial in the innings,
the pair combining for a ninth wicket stand of 82 off 108
deliveries.
Otago Country was eventually all out just after the tea break
and was left to try and pick up some early wickets to put it
on the front foot for day two.
Mid-Canterbury opening bowler Bevan Rabenscrose grabbed four
wickets while at the other end opening partner Richard Print
had three.
At stumps on day one, Mid-Canterbury was 66 for two with Des
Kruger on 26 and Liam McLeod on 19 at the crease.
Kotcamp managed to snare both Mid-Canterbury wickets on the
first day.
Day two saw Kruger through to 74 before he was out-thought by
spin bowler Jason Domigan.
Jeff Naish (67) and Bo Houston (64) also played some fine
strokes in the run chase.
As tea closed in Otago Country managed to dismiss the rest of
the Mid-Canterbury batsmen with the final four wickets
falling for just 11 runs.
Kotcamp and Cameron Rutherford were the benefactors of the
lower order collapse with four wickets and three wickets
respectively.
With Mid-Canterbury all out 80 runs short of the Otago
Country total and no chance of an outright win for the hosts,
play was stopped shortly before the tea break.
Otago Country's next match is against Southland in
Invercargill this weekend.
