BMX: Peel best Otago prospect

Avon Peel is Otago's best prospect for a gold medal at the New Zealand BMX championships in Tauranga over Easter.

Peel (22), a student at the University of Otago, was a member of the New Zealand team at last year's world championships at Auckland.

He displayed good form at the Australian championships in January and won a gold, silver and bronze medal in his grade.

Peel will be competing in the men's aged 17 to 29 grade at Tauranga.

Another strong prospect is Rory Meek (7), who finished third at the world championships.

Amelia Johnston, this year's North and South Island champion, will be seeking a podium spot in the women's over-40 cruiser class.

South Island champion Kyle Rutherford is competing in the boys aged 16 grade and Jacob Wadsworth is in the top eight qualifiers in the boys aged 9 grade.

''There has been a lot of rain at Tauranga and it will be testing conditions on the new track.''

BMX Dunedin president Jason Wadsworth said.

''It will be difficult to deal with and will even out the field.''

There are 11 riders going to the championships from Dunedin and nine from Alexandra.

The most likely competitor to reach the podium from Alexandra is Fletcher Sharman in the boys aged 15 cruiser section.

He now lives in Australia but is still registered with the Alexandra club.

Josh Smith finished in the top three at the South Island championships and will be competitive in the boys aged 14 grade.

Holly Oldham, in the girls aged 11 grade, is a gold medal prospect.
