Cycling: Rollo (9) hangs on in handicap race

Caleb Rollo had an outstanding performance at the Seddon Park velodrome on Tuesday night, winning the junior handicap race.

Rollo (9) started with a handicap of 220m, with fellow roadster Olivia McDonald at 245m in the six-lap race.

The older juniors caught McDonald, who put in a strong effort, but could not catch Rollo.

Jody Syme rode hard and had Rollo in sight on the home straight, but ran out of time, crossing the line second. James Gardner finished third.

Syme had a stellar evening, riding off the front in the point-a-lap race to take all but one point.

Sam McDonald won the first sprint, eventually finishing second ahead of Sian Remon. Syme also dominated the five-lap scratch race, finishing ahead of Remon and Emma Howell.

Bradley White was outstanding in the junior A grade, beating smooth riding by Madeleine Cooper-Forster and Mark McCormack to win both the six and eight-lap scratch races.

He could not win all three races, however, as McCormack and then Cooper-Forster crossed the line ahead of him in the point-a-lap race.

James McKellar won both A/B scratch races. In the eight-lap race, McKellar and Ewan Syme attacked, splitting the field with four laps to go.

Syme could not get there in the end and was passed by Bryony Telford and Craig Thorne.

Syme stuck with McKellar in the 24-lap race and crossed the line second, ahead of Phoebe Swale.

Bryan Murray had strong competition in C grade, being beaten by Swale and Ella Harris in the six-lap scratch race.

Harris also won the elimination race, finishing ahead of Murray and new rider Julia Horsfield. Horsfield put up a strong sprint with Murray in the 16-lap scratch race, finishing a wheel length behind. Isla Anderson finished third.
