Former Otago rider Greg Henderson was caught in a nasty crash which disrupted of the Tour de France today.

Henderson, riding for Lotto Soudal, was one of about two dozen riders brought down in the pile-up during the third stage, from Antwerp to Huy in Belgium.

It is thought the crash occurred when the French rider William Bonnet's bike touched another cycle's wheel, creating a flurry of flying bikes and bodies.

Race organisers neutralised the race, forcing riders to move at minimal pace with no breakaways or time gains permitted.

Organisers later decided to stop the race altogether and the peloton came to a halt 55km from the finish before resuming the stage.

"Due to the extraordinary circumstances of the crash at a very high speed, the race was neutralised to allow the injured riders to get back in the peloton," organisers said in a statement.

"Twenty-five minutes after the crash a new start was given at the top of the Cote de Bohisseau with 50 km to go."

The extent of Henderson's injuries were not known, he got back on his bike and completed the stage.
