Shocked. That was how Brett Davis felt when he eliminated the favourite to reach the final of the epee at the national fencing championships in Dunedin this weekend.

The Lion Foundation Arena will play host to the foil, sabre and epee this weekend as the national fencing championships come to Dunedin.

Dave Barson became Dunedin's master fencing coach after enduring a five-week course in the heat of Doha.

Members of the Dunedin Salle Angelo Club dominated the podium during the fencing event, with Brian Ellis winning the sabre gold medal and fellow club fencers filling the minor placings.

He has a tournament named after him, may have coached everyone in the tournament, and probably has more experience than all the competitors put together.
