All Whites coach Anthony Hudson has announced that Winston Reid will captain New Zealand beginning with the first game under the new coach against Uzbekistan in Tashkent on Tuesday.

Hudson said the 26-year-old Reid has all the qualities required to lead the All Whites moving forward.

"Winston has been superb since he first arrived in camp," Hudson said.

"He cares deeply about his country and that is quite evident to see. He leads by example on and off the pitch and he will be an incredible role model especially for all our young players coming through.

"He's a top player, a good man and will lead the team in his own way, taking us into this new era of the All Whites."

West Ham United defender Reid is excited at the opportunity both he and the team have on Tuesday as they set a path towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

"I'm proud that Anthony has placed faith in me to lead this team and I'm looking forward to the challenge of facing a strong side like Uzbekistan in our first match of a new World Cup cycle," Reid said.
