The Wellington Phoenix will head across the Tasman this week with confidence boosted ahead a head-to-head battle for a top-four spot in the A-League.

The fifth-placed Phoenix face Sydney FC, who sit a point above them, next Sunday after a third impressive performance in a row.

The result against the Central Coast Mariners in Auckland on Saturday - a 1-1 draw - didn't bring the same rewards as their wins over Melbourne City and the Newcastle Jets, when they bagged a total of eight goals.

They also needed a late equaliser from livewire striker Roy Krishna to cancel out Matt Simon's first-half tap-in, which had come against the run of play.

But attacking midfielder Michael McGlinchey says the Phoenix produced some of their best football at Eden Park since he joined the club at the start of the season.

"We created so many chances in the first half, we just didn't put them away," he said.

"We weren't really disappointed at half-time because we thought we were playing some fantastic football.

"We were unlucky for them to get that chance. We kept plugging away and we managed to get that equaliser."

McGlinchey had an outstanding game as part of a front three that included Krishna and Nathan Burns and it was his chipped pass that led to the 78th minute equaliser.

He said the Ernie Merrick-coached Phoenix would take away plenty of positives despite getting just a point.

"We've shown with amount of chances we can create that we're a dangerous team," he said.

"Since I've come here, Ernie has always been going on about playing football on the ground, playing it through the lines, working with possession and, in the final third, creating chances, and I think we did it all [against the Mariners]."

The All White said his combination with fellow new signing Burns and with Krishna, who joined the Phoenix at the start of the year as an injury replacement, was beginning to gel.

Between them, the trio have nabbed 16 goals over the first 10 rounds, with Krishna's strike against the Mariners making it making four games in a row that the Fiji international has found the back of the net.

"We've got a lot of freedom, especially myself, to get try to get on the ball and I've got two flying machines in front of me," McGlinchey said.

"We've got a good understanding with each other and I'm getting an understanding with the midfielders as well. We're still coming together but we've definitely improved in the last few weeks."
