Football: Stunning strikes as 17 goals knocked in

There were some spectacular strikes among the 17 goals scored in Football South Premier League matches on Saturday.

They ranged from delicate chips and bulleting headers to full blooded drives that left goalkeepers clawing fresh air in desperation, and there were a few unusual candidates among the strikers.

Dunedin Technical beat Roslyn Wakari 4-2 at Ellis Park, but the home side threatened an upset with an early goal as Isaac Nicolson cut in along the byline and hit a low cross which Rupert Mark drilled into the net.

Technical equalised in the 15th minute with a trademark booming header by Andrew Douglas from a corner, but the big defender watched the style of striker Taylor McCormack in the 31st minute when he superbly volleyed Technical into a 2-1 lead.

Douglas then surprised all present when he hit a similar ripper of a shot with his left foot that beat Roslyn keeper Tom Stevens, and the centreback was deluged by team mates.

Two goals in seven minutes had Technical brimful of confidence, and coach Aaron Burgess's side might have gone further ahead, but Roslyn started the second half with spirit.

Cam Attwood set standards in ball winning and, with Curtis Day and Ben O'Farrell accepting the challenge, Roslyn fired in several crosses.

In a crowded goalmouth, Attwood shot his side back into contention with a 48th minute goal and 3 2 scoreline that re ignited the match.

However, Technical generated more attacking play, and hard working man of the match Josh Stewart grabbed the winning goal in the 68th minute to reclaim the Massetti Trophy, played for annually between the clubs.

At the Caledonian Ground, Mosgiel beat University 5-2.

University started full of vigour with sharp penetrating runs by Jeremy Fong and Ewan Bakker, but it was a piece of almost languid finishing by Mosgiel that opened the scoring, as Cody Brook casually chipped tall Varsity keeper James Berry for a memorable goal.

It was 2-0 after Regan Coldicott ran wide and delivered a low cross that Isaac Snell swept in, and Snell scored his second minutes later for a halftime scoreline of 3-0.

Varsity coach Darren Hart would be pleased his side scored twice, and ''drew'' the second half, but the blue machine kept purring, and a brilliant strike by Eder Franchini and a predatory finish by Coldicott wrapped up three points for Mosgiel.

At Sunnyvale, Green Island was in control, and goals by Ben Kiore, Jack Kirkwood and Reid Hulleman made for a 3-1 win over Northern, with Dave Henderson getting the Magpies' consolation goal.

Despite having a week off due to the bye, Caversham still tops the table with 19 points. Technical is one point behind and Mosgiel, with a game in hand, has 17 points.
